7 Years Old Wilson Zhao Plays Penguins by Linda Niamath

Wilson Zhao is seven year old and started his piano lesson with Dr. Dong-Dong Dong when he was six. Under the patient education with Dr. Dong, Wilson gradually built up his music knowledge and playing skills. He began to explore the music with matching stories. The most important is that he enjoys music very much and is so proud to showcase his piano knowledge to his friends as a young pianist.

Recently Wilson played “Penguin” at Markham Musical Festival and won the Silver Medal of Class 4. Wilson not only won the medal at the competition, but also won the passion of being able to present him with music.

Linda Niamath (b. 1939)

Niamath was born in British Columbia. After graduating from the University of page 28 British Columbia, she taught elementary school in Vancouver, and then began her career as a piano teacher and composer. Her many albums of piano pieces for younger students are great favorites with both teachers and students. Penguins is taken from her collection called A Zoo for You.

What (or Who) are Penguins?

Here is Niamath's description:

Penguins are flightless birds, one to three feet in height, found in the southern hemisphere. They have webbed feet and paddle-like flippers for swimming and diving. We delight in detecting human qualities in penguins' behavior. These birds yawn, stretch, snooze, and preen. They waddle up and down beaches in groups, joining other groups along the way.

Niamath's music creates an amusing musical picture of penguins waddling about and sliding down snow banks. Composers use sounds, just as artists use colors, to paint a picture of a scene or a story. Composers can choose among many different types of sounds-or notes-to create many different colors. Different ways of playing these notes-such as legato or staccato-add still more variety to a composer's palette.
