Didi Xiong,

Thirteen years old Didi Yi Wei Xiong has been studying piano since age 6 with Shiyan Zhang, and later joined Euromusic center under the tutelage of Grace Lin.

Yi Wei has won numerous awards and scholarships in various festivals and piano competitions in China and North America. In the summer of 2008, she was the grand champion of the North American Invitational age 11 competition at the American Guild of music, Detroit, Michigan. That fall, Yi Wei was able to capture four first places at the Arts Richmond Hill music Festival, and was invited to perform at their gala concert.

At the Markham Music Festival 2009, Yi Wei was the recipient of the Kemble Trophy awarded to the most outstanding junior pianist. In 2010, she had won the prestigious Canadian Composer Trophy, as well as the 12 and under Age achievement Award. In 2009, she also completed her Grade 10 piano examination, receiving First Class Honours with Distinction at the Royal conservatory of Music. Presently, she is working towards her ARCT performer Diploma.

Barbara Pentland,

composer (b at Winnipeg 2 Jan 1912; d at Vancouver 5 Feb 2000). One of the first Canadian composers to use avant garde techniques, she studied at the Juilliard School of Music, New York City, and the Berkshire Music Center, Mass. Through her high-quality compositions for piano, orchestra, chamber ensemble and voice, she helped introduce 2 generations of Canadians to modern music. She taught at the Toronto Conservatory of Music from 1943 to 1949 and the University of British Columbia from 1949 to 1963. Honours include doctorates from University of Manitoba in 1976 and Simon Fraser University in 1985, and the Diplôme d'honneur bestowed by the Canadian Conference of the Arts in 1977.
